‘Shrek’ Me Up: A Look Back on the Childrens’ Classic

For this Time Warp, I decided I would touch on one of my absolute favorite animated movie franchises. That, of course, is the Academy Award winning film, ‘Shrek’. It’s still funny to me to be able to say “Academy Award winning” to the classic swamp-dwelling ogre that is my man Shrek.

Many who haven’t seen this iconic film may ask why it won Best Animated Feature in 2002. Well, those who have seen it can tell you exactly why.

The mean green fighting machine Shrek (Mike Myers) is an angry ogre who just likes to be left alone, as most people nowadays. But once love comes along, that changes, as with anyone who suddenly finds love. Shrek’s love didn’t come suddenly, of course. It came after a long journey with his new friend – whether or not he likes to admit it – a donkey, whose name is, well, Donkey (Eddie Murphy).

The love interest/self-hating princess in the movie is Fiona (played by Cameron Diaz), who loves throwing tantrums at every moment she can. You may think that it’s obnoxious, but it becomes very easy to love her by the end.

That is the overall plot of the entire first movie, but they do so well developing all the relationships within it. Being able to meet dozens of fairy tale creatures who annoy Shrek to the brink of absolute fury is, even if it’s not to Shrek, completely hilarious to watch.

Half the enjoyability of this movie revolves around the supreme soundtrack that plays throughout. I mean, we have songs like “All Star” by Smash Mouth and “Bad Reputation” performed by Joan Jett. That sells it right there, doesn’t it?

It’s an undeniably enjoyable movie and impossible not to love. It sparked a sequel that is debatably better than the first if not just as good. It’s one of those movie franchises that anybody will want to watch on a lazy afternoon in the summer, with their kids for a family movie night, in the middle of a snowstorm in the winter, or pretty much at anytime. That is how I define a classic.

Film Forecast Friday: June 1st

Julia’s Predictions:

This is an interesting week because for the first time in a while there are no big blockbusters being released. Out of the movies that are being released I think Adrift will have the biggest box office numbers. It has notable actors Shailene Woodley (Fault in Our Stars, Divergent) and Sam Claflin (Me Before You, Hunger Games) in it and I’ve seen a lot of marketing for it.

I think Action Point and Upgrade will do alright. I haven’t heard too much about either of them, but Action Point has Johnny Knoxville (Jackass) in it which will likely bring out audiences. Also, Upgrade is a Blumhouse Productions film and those tend to do well.

American Animals is absolutely amazing and I strongly recommend you go see it. We have already reviewed it, so if you need any more convincing to go see it check out our review!

Finally, A Kid Like Jake which honestly I didn’t know was a movie until today. It has Jim Parsons in it so maybe it will attract some Big Bang Theory fans?

Anthony’s Predictions:

I am beyond excited for Adrift with Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. This will also be the moneymaker for the week at the box office, even if it will not make quite as much as previous weeks.

I have heard so much about American Animals that I’ve gotten very excited to see it. It has such a unique group of actors in it (including Evan Peters!) so I know that I’ll enjoy it already.

I definitely forgot Action Point and Upgrade were even coming out this week. I don’t really have a high opinion on them but I believe they will do about the same at the box office.

A Kid Like Jake won’t be too crazy spectacular, but should be fun because of Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons, as he is in it.

‘The Open House’ Is A Darkness In Itself

I don’t care what you say about Thirteen Reasons Why, Dylan Minnette is adorable. I say that because he’s equally as cute in The Open House, a new horror flick on Netflix that actually proves to know what it’s doing. The majority of the time at least.

Dylan Minnette plays teenager Logan Wallace alongside his mother Naomi (played by Piercey Dalton) after his father gets killed in a roadside hit. I swear that’s not a spoiler, it happens at the very beginning of the movie and it just happens to be what the entire movie is about.

Despite awful reviews on Rotten Tomatoes (it literally has a 13%), I found it to be a pretty good movie.

The acting wasn’t bad at all. Dalton and Minnette are both experienced actors and clearly knew what they were doing. Minnette has even done horror before (Let Me In, Don’t Breathe), so he knew how to not act amateurly like most actors his age in a horror movie. He kept every creepy moment suspenseful and every scary moment bone chilling.

The scenery was beautiful at first but later fell through after it got repetitive. Many movies have repetitive scenery and do it well, such as Breaking In earlier this month, that used one house for the entire film but made the house have real meaning.

This movie, however, used this house and didn’t add any feeling to it, despite how hard they tried. It was used to successfully build a story, and it did that, but it wasn’t necessarily fun to see for an hour and a half.

The Open House was actually a decent movie to me. It absolutely isn’t my favorite 2018 Netflix movie (Dude and Veronica still hold that title), but it wasn’t the worse. It was a decent horror flick that matched up to some of the other mediocre horror movies we’ve seen the last few years.

Julia’s Prediction:

Obviously Deadpool 2 will takeover the box office this weekend and may even give Avengers: Infinity War a run for its money for that #1 box office spot. Also, I literally just saw Deadpool 2 as I’m writing this and I loved it. I strongly recommend.

Book Club looks pretty funny, but I don’t expect it to make any big waves at the box office. Although it currently has a surprisingly high rating on Rotten Tomatoes for what it is, so who knows. Maybe it will surprise me.

I honestly can’t even believe Show Dogs is a movie. I mean are creepy real looking talking animals really anyone’s kind of movie? I definitely expect this movie to crash and burn.

Dark Crimes looks pretty intense and it has Jim Carrey in it so it will probably do alright. First Reformed is already Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes so that one will also probably do pretty good. And finally On Chesil Beach which stars Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird. This one looks pretty interesting and I think among its audiences it will do pretty well.

Anthony’s Prediction:

Even only being open for one day, Deadpool 2 is already breaking records. It’s killing it at the box office and will continue that through this weekend. Ryan Reynolds knew what he was doing signing on for this movie.

Book Club is going to be interesting, but won’t do crazy well at the box office. That being said, it’ll still take the second most spot next to Deadpool 2.

First Reformed is being very positively recepted and I love that. It’s a good movie with a story that needs to be told, and it deserves the good it’s getting.

Dark Crimes and On Chesil Beach are the two movies this week that I think will be looked passed and won’t be big or relevant at all.

Penetrating the Interminable Mystery Of ‘Ismael’s Ghosts’

2018 has already had a good share of foreign films, when you put Zama and Fantastic Woman (which won Best Foreign Film at the 2018 Oscars) in the mix. It was exciting to see that a French foreign film was coming to theatres as I knew it would have an interesting plot and involve a person named Pierre as all french films inevitably have.

Ismael’s Ghosts ended up becoming very confusing very fast. It was simple, at first, seemingly about a woman named Sylvia (Charlotte Gainsbourg) and her boyfriend of two years, Ismael (Mathieu Amalric), who have to recover from a strange turn of events as Ismael’s presumed dead wife Corletta (Marion Cotillard) shows up at an unexpected time.

The acting was slightly better than mediocre. The actors and actresses were new to me, for the most part. Amalric was previously in The Grand Budapest Hotel, Munich, and Quantum of Solace. Cotillard is a one-time academy award winning actress for La Vie en Rose and also appeared in Inception.

As for the plot, it’s complexity develops into something significantly more mysterious, intense, and confusing. This included a story about Ismael as a director and his movie which ends up being part of the twist at the end. At least, I think it was. It got so complicated at the end that I couldn’t tell if it was a twist or something I was just missing the whole time.

Overall, Ismael’s Ghosts was a fine movie. It was confusing beyond confusing but that was its biggest flaw. Make sure you’re ready, though, because it’s the longest 2 hour and 15 minute film you’ll ever watch. As in, it will feel like you’ve been there for a full year before you leave.

‘Mute’: Potentially Awful

In the relatively new Netflix film Mute, we see another representation of just how far a movie can go to alter what we know.

Mute follows muted man Leo (Alexander Skarsgard) as he tries to find his missing girlfriend Naadirah (Seyneb Saleh) in a very high-tech, scientific Germany that seems impossible to navigate. When the characters try to make their way around the city, they even look nearly confused as to what they’re doing.

The movie also follows a very aggressive and terrifying Cactus (Paul Rudd) and his best friend Duck (Justin Theroux) as they make their way through a very strange – and confusing – surgical operation in Germany. Cactus also has a daughter, but doesn’t have a wife anymore. His creepy best friend Duck seems to have a sexual fascination with his young daughter as well as anyone else under the age of 16. They make that very clear as he tries to hook up with anyone who even looks like a minor.

The whole movie is very messy and very sloppily tries to connect all plots at the end of the movie. Up until the last 30 minutes, you would think that these were two entirely separate stories. I won’t spoil exactly how they are connected, but I will say that it’s one of the laziest storyline twists I’ve ever seen a movie put together.

A movie with tons of potential, but little of that is acted on.

The acting was probably the best part of the movie. All of the high profile actors (Rudd, Skarsgard, Theroux) all bring very solid performances to the table. They each develop their characters in entirely unique ways and did the best with what they had to work with. They knew how to evoke emotion in the audience and played upon that perfectly.
Mute is ultimately not a very good movie. It has insane potential but fails to bring that potential to life. It attempts to show emotion, which it only completes through the acting rather than the messy story. It uses a plot twist that has only one purpose; to shock the audience. There was no meaning to it whatsoever.

‘Super Troopers 2’: The Worst Comedy of 2018

Last night, I saw Super Troopers 2. I hadn’t seen the first Super Troopers and probably never will because of how unfunny the sequel was.

Let’s start off with the story, which had a lot of potential to be hilarious. It follows a group of former highway patrol officers from Vermont who are invited back to the force when a French speaking town in Canada faces a transition to US sovereignty.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There were parts of the movie that definitely worked such as the massive stereotypes of Americans and French-Canadians. My favorite parts were when the Canadians themselves talk about “moose fucking” or any type of animal sex. There were also times when they’d roast Americans on how fat and disgusting they are even if it was a fat Canadian making the joke.

But, the offensive comedy only made up 20 percent of the film because most of it consisted of dick jokes. Actually, the entire film was a 6” long dick joke. For instance, it shows a group of cops handcuffing the rookie cop so they can shave his balls (which is just weird). It went so far as to showing Rob Lowe casually touching and playing with a prostitute’s penis in the middle of a conversation.

In short, the writers love dicks.

But, the truly terrible lies in the writing of the jokes and the serving of the lines by the actors.

Directed by Jay Chandrasekhar (who also plays female sex enhancer addict, Thorny) and written by Broken Lizard (the main cast in Super Troopers), the film shows how some people just aren’t as good as they used to be. Either Chandrasekhar is not good at directing, or the guys at Broken Lizard have lost their edge in comedy writing and performance. There were many moments while watching it where the audience just sat in awkward silence because of a bad joke or just plain bad acting.

And I get it, it’s not supposed to be superb in acting, but it takes a good comedic actor to deliver their lines to make people laugh. Super Troopers 2 was a comedy and with that in mind, the audience expects it to make them laugh most of the time. Instead, I found myself confused and cringing over the many times they failed to do that.

With that being said, I feel like I’ve made my argument pretty clear on how unfunny this movie was. Maybe I have a bad sense of humor (not likely) or maybe it’s just not my type of humor but overall, Super Troopers 2 just wasn’t what I expected it to be and lacked what it was supposed to have.
